Profile
If you thought Inzamam was out of shape, wait till you see this bloke. As vice-captain during the 1999 World Cup, Akram Khan played Obelix to Aminul Islam's Asterix, twirling a menhir-sized bat for 42 in the controversial win over Pakistan. His technique is hardly worthy of the name - in fact, Akram possesses the widest gate in international cricket - but he's no mug when it comes to straight-lofting the spinners. Very much a specialist slip.

Profile
A natural strokemaker, Al Sahariar has struggled to hold down a regular place in the Bangladeshi side, though his talent has never been in question. At his best he is a wonderful timer of the ball, especially through the on side. At his worst, he lets his bottom hand dominate his strokes, and he reaches for the ball with flat-footed uncertainty. His cause has not been helped by the Bangladeshi selectors, who insist on playing him as an opener. He attempted to curb his natural aggression, and played some gutsy cameos, but a highest score of 71 in 15 Tests led to his omission from Bangladesh's maiden tour of the Caribbean, and despite good club form since then, he has consistently been overlooked by the selectors.

Profile
Hasibul Hossain is the only genuine quick bowler of Bangladesh who is operating the new ball for almost six years for his country. He had an auspicious start against Sri Lanka in 1995, Asia Cup, when he dispatched Roshan Mahanama for by a lethal out swinger in his very first over. He hardly had to look back the following years. He was equally successful in ICC Trophy and World Cup 1999. In those tournaments he appeared as the only bowler for his country to attack the opponent batsmen.

Profile
With a priceless ability to occupy the crease, Javed Omar Belim has developed into the closest thing to a Test-class opener that Bangladesh have produced in their torrid early years of senior international cricket. A glut of one-day internationals early in his career did not help his development, but all complaints that he scores his runs too slowly were offset by a historic Test debut n April 2001, when he carried his bat for 85 not out, only the third player in history to achieve this in his first match. "Gulla" underlined his limpet-like qualities later the same year with a painstaking 80, compiled over 100 overs, in his sixth Test, against Zimbabwe at Chittagong. His maiden international hundred, against Pakistan at Peshawar in August 2003, gave Bangladesh a first-innings lead for the first time and showed the first glimpse of a new steelier attitude from his side. He has chalked up a half-century of one-day caps, with a highest score of 85 not out against Sri Lanka back in the pre-Test days of 2000, but it in the five-day arena that his obduracy is best received, and Omar was the only man to come to terms with England's early-season conditions on a traumatic tour in 2005. He reached double figures in all four innings of the Test series, including a brave 71 at the final attempt at Chester-le-Street. He remained in the Test frame, although big scores were elusive. However, Omar has been in and out of the one-day side and after a poor start to the tour of Zimbabwe in July 2006, he was dropped for the remaining matches and excluded from the tour of Kenya that followed. He also missed the Champions Trophy in October-November and the subsequent one-day series against Zimbabwe and Scotland. However, his vast experience and a good showing against Zimbabwe A ensured that he got a World Cup ticket to the West Indies

Profile
Khaled Mahmud was arguably one of the least talented cricketers ever to captain his country, but he brought an amateur's enthusiasm to one of the least palatable tasks in world cricket. Despite scoring a composed 47 on his international debut, against India at Dhaka in 1997-98, it was as a wobbly seam bowler that he made his mark on the game, for better or for worse. During the 1999 World Cup, Mahmud made the most of England's early-season conditions to take three top-order wickets for 31 runs, as Pakistan crashed to a 62-run defeat at Northampton. It was a result that all but sealed Bangladesh's elevation to Test status. A good communicator and team man, he succeeded Khaled Mashud as Bangladesh captain, following their humiliating 2003 World Cup. But it was during this period that his Test bowling average briefly ballooned above 400 - the worst mark of all time. As Bangladesh's run of failures continued, Mahmud became the target for a hostile crowd, particularly during his final series in charge, against England in late 2003. He was dropped from the squad soon afterwards, and retired, only to reverse his decision shortly afterwards. Though he hasn't played a Test since November 2003, he's been a regular in the one-day squad and took career-best figures of 4 for 19 against Zimbabwe in March 2004. Mahmud announced intentions to retire in October 2005 but made one last appearance against Sri Lanka in February 2006. Fittingly, he top-scored and left the arena to a standing ovation - but it was still not enough to save his side.

Profile

A dashing striker of the ball, Tushar Imran established himself as one of the rising stars of Bangladesh cricket at the age of just 17, when he cracked 131 from 106 balls in a domestic league match in 2000-01 - the same season in which his country was granted Test status. His one-day debut came the following year against Zimbabwe, and when new blood was demanded to help revive Bangladesh's flagging Test fortunes, he was thrust into the fray against Sri Lanka in July 2002. He struggled, making 8 and 28 in a 288-run defeat, but the selectors clearly believed he had what it takes - three former captains, Naimur Rahman, Akram Khan and Aminul Islam, were axed to make way for him. By his own admission he can be too impetuous for his own good, and though his ODI appearances continued to tick over, his Test career stalled after three fruitless outings. But the Bangladesh A tour of England in the summer of 2005 provided an opportunity to forge a second coming, and after impressing in patches - not least with a run-a-ball 70 against Surrey - he returned to the squad for the tour of Sri Lanka that September

Profile
Sanwar Hossain is the Stuart Law of Bangladeshi cricket. He caught the selectors' eye in 1994 by scoring a mature 76 against Sri Lanka A, but his international opportunities were strictly rationed thereafter five inglorious outings in the ICC Trophy of 1997, and a handful of matches against India and Pakistan the following year. A crease-occupier in principle, it was only when the middle-order stalwarts Akram Khan and Aminul Islam were dropped for the home one-dayers against Zimbabwe in 2001-02 that Sanwar earned a second chance. He is an increasingly useful offspinner, though his maiden over in international cricket was nothing of the sort - it went for 17 runs.
