London 2012: opening ceremony wows the world with wit and drama
Danny Boyle and his team stunned the world with an Opening Ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics that showed the best of British history in a riot of colour, costume and comedy. Interspersing the film director's Isles of Wonder vision of the United Kingdom were moments of pathos and poignancy, in turn giving way to breath taking theatricality designed to amaze the billion-strong global television audience.

The show, which spanned the birth-pangs of industrialisation, the fight for women's votes, the start of mass migration and the birth of the NHS and took in Britain's rich tapestry of popular music, film and literature, won plaudits around the world.
